The substation contains a large amount of ageing equipment and requires modernisation and refurbishment.

The cross-border connections from the Rauma substation – FennoSkan 1 and FennoSkan 2 – enable a total of 1,200 MW of electricity to be transferred between Sweden and Finland. Rauma substation is important to the functioning of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, and it also ensures the supply of electricity to the Rauma and Satakunta regions.

The refurbishment project will begin next year, and the modernised substation will be completed in 2024 or 2025. Construction requires precise outage plans to ensure that the refurbishment work does not disrupt the normal operation of the power system.
