Opportunity and coercion: Getting a grip on climate change
Although we have long been aware of the acceleration of climate change and its impact on biodiversity, we have only begun taking note of the economic impact in recent years.

Fingrid Current assembled a top team of experts to discuss the hottest industry themes in April 2021. The main topic: the power system of the future. Gathering a record audience online, the event addressed electricity consumption, production and infrastructure, with Fingrid CEO Jukka Ruusunen as the host.

In September, Fingrid arranged a climate-themed week for its personnel. Elina Hiltunen, Futurist, and Riku Lumiaro, Biodiversity Expert, visited to talk about climate change as a trend, the loss of biodiversity, and what climate action will be required to mitigate and halt the change.

An electric cable ferry travelling to the island of Högsar in Nauvo, Parainen, has brought a splash of green to Finland’s diesel-dominated ferry traffic.

Fingrid is preparing to initiate a project to install 110-kilovolt GIS using a new insulation technology. The vision is for 2025, and all switchgear installed after this date will contain environmentally friendly insulating gases. Switchgear containing SF6 as an insulating gas will be systematically phased out.

Fingrid’s Climate Week took place from 14 to 20 September. The aim of the Climate Week is to encourage people and businesses to take tangible climate action.

Sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) has been the primary insulating medium in high-voltage electrical switchgear and controlgear for 40 years. Fingrid prevents the potent greenhouse gas from escaping into the atmosphere by constantly monitoring the equipment where it is used.

Energy is one of the four themes of the 2020 Housing Fair in Tuusula. The municipality of Tuusula and energy companies are heavily involved in turning the fair site into a virtually zero-energy area.

Three different solutions exist for charging electric vehicles: conventional charging, smart charging and bidirectional charging.
“Smart charging is the modern-day solution for households because it takes into consideration the needs of consumers and the environment,” says Ville Väre, Energy Service Manager at Liikennevirta Oy.

In order to enable Finland to reach its climate targets, Fingrid must ensure that renewable energy producers are connected to the main grid and that the energy is transmitted onwards for customers and society to use.
