The switch to renewables will require continuous grid development

The electricity transmission main grid got its start in 1929, and this year it will celebrate an impressive 90 years of operation. We’re celebrating this anniversary in a working way; grid development continues because the need to transmit electricity will grow in the future as well.

Environment

Transmission line routes as part of the landscape

When Fingrid plans a transmission line route, a team of experts also assesses its impacts on the landscape. Landscape values can be associated with nature or the built environment and history. For example, a rapids or factory milieu may be a valuable site where the route selection is carefully considered.

Investment decisions safeguard strong transmission connections

Fingrid has made an investment decision concerning construction of the 400 kV Forest Line through Finland. The transmission line will run from Petäjävesi to Muhos and strengthen electricity transmission connections in the north-south direction.

The main grid is growing and developing

Fingrid has had several transmission line worksites in progress this year. The next five projects – covering 600 kilometres of new transmission lines – are already in the final phase of planning. This is a sign of the need to renew and develop the main grid for future needs.

The North Karelian main grid will be reinforced in three phases

Finland will begin to renew the main grid’s 110 kilovolt transmission lines in North Karelia next year. The wooden towers are more than 50 years old and aging. They will be replaced with sturdy steel towers, which can also withstand heavy hoarfrost loads in the winter.

Rautarouva gets a new lease on life

Modernisation of the Rautarouva (Iron Lady) line, which is the oldest section of Finland’s main grid, is nearing completion. Work to renew the 82-kilometre Koria-Ylilikkälä power line is currently in progress. The 110-kilovolt power line is being dismantled and replaced with a new 400-kilovolt line.

Safety

It’s all about attitude

The majority of occupational accidents are caused by human or unconscious errors. This is why the attitude and commitment of employees is decisive in terms of how occupational safety is realised at worksites. This year, the emphasis in Fingrid’s occupational safety development is daily practices.

Travelling wave monitors provide more accurate fault location

Travelling wave monitors will be installed on 220/110 kV substations in northern Finland this autumn. In addition to more accurate fault location, the devices reveal hidden faults that can be repaired before a real fault situation even occurs. The monitors are manufactured by Qualitrol and will be installed by Siemens.
