A year marked by equipment failures
An equipment failure that posed a serious risk to occupational safety occurred when a reactor circuit breaker broke in August. Fortunately this caused no personal injury.

Fingrid is building a new substation in Inkeroinen on a plot of land rented from Stora Enso. Connection bays to serve four main grid customers
The substations of the future will be digital. The first digital substation pilot is being built at Pernoonkoski substation. The objective is to test how a digital system functions in different situations.
Olkiluoto substation, which is one of the most important main grid hubs, will be renewed using a solution that is unique in Finland. Once Olkiluoto
Last summer’s fire at Olkiluoto substation was a practical test for Fingrid’s preparedness to act in a real situation involving the threat of an electricity shortage. The case provided experience and practice for internal coordination and contacts, and also for developing internal and external communications in serious situations.
A current transformer at Fingrid’s Olkiluoto substation was damaged on 18 July 2018. During the resulting fire and substation repair work, the electricity supply from both of Olkiluoto’s nuclear power plants to the main grid was interrupted.
A new type of Liekkiloukku (flame trap) cover solution has been completed at the transformer shield pool at Fingrid’s Ulvila substation. This is an innovative way to putting out liquid fires caused by accidents.
Greater use of underground cables has increased the amount of reactive power and thus main grid maintenance costs. This means that, starting at the beginning of next year, Fingrid will have to monitor consumption of reactive power on a connection-specific basis and charge for it if consumption exceeds specified limits. In the future, it may be sensible for electricity companies to invest in technology that compensates for reactive power in a suitable manner.
