An equipment failure that posed a serious risk to occupational safety occurred when a reactor circuit breaker broke in August. Fortunately this caused no personal injury.
Fingrid is building an occupational safety culture in cooperation with its service providers. Proactive occupational safety leads to better work quality in addition to promoting business and a positive employer image. The suppliers’ occupational safety group established by Fingrid brings together service providers to develop new and good occupational practices in collaboration with the client.
Fingrid has arranged project manager training in cooperation with Project Institute Finland during 2017 and 2018. At the end of the training, managers can complete a certificate that complies with an international system.
Fingrid’s innovation activity is primarily aiming for more efficient and higher-quality operations. Development work is being done in cooperation with experts from different sectors. Everyday examples of this are the Noiseless Acoustics sound camera and the NordSafety reporting system.
A new type of Liekkiloukku (flame trap) cover solution has been completed at the transformer shield pool at Fingrid’s Ulvila substation. This is an innovative way to putting out liquid fires caused by accidents.
Turvapuisto – an occupational safety training park – was opened in Kuopio at the end of August. The park is designed as a practical training environment for organisations. Other safety training parks are located in Espoo and Oulu.
Modernisation of the Rautarouva (Iron Lady) line, which is the oldest section of Finland’s main grid, is nearing completion. Work to renew the 82-kilometre Koria-Ylilikkälä power line is currently in progress. The 110-kilovolt power line is being dismantled and replaced with a new 400-kilovolt line.
The majority of occupational accidents are caused by human or unconscious errors. This is why the attitude and commitment of employees is decisive in terms of how occupational safety is realised at worksites. This year, the emphasis in Fingrid’s occupational safety development is daily practices.
Development of procurement chain management is a part of responsible corporate operations and its impacts can be seen locally and globally. Fingrid’s asset management day held early in the summer demonstrated that responsibility does not just happen – the contractor has to be active.
