Renewing a main grid hub

The end of August was an historic moment at Alajärvi substation, as the last air blast circuit breakers in the main grid were removed from use as part of the substation renewal project. Project Manager Sami Mäki and Expert Heikki Porkka, who planned the transmission outages, have been involved in the different stages of this substation.

Main grid collection moves to the Museum of Technology

Following closure of the Elektra electricity museum, its contents will be transferred to the Museum of Technology collections. One particular aim was to keep the main grid collection, which describes the construction and maintenance of the main grid, as a single entity. Part of the collection will be displayed in the new Land of Technology exhibition opening in October.

Rautarouva gets a new lease on life

Modernisation of the Rautarouva (Iron Lady) line, which is the oldest section of Finland’s main grid, is nearing completion. Work to renew the 82-kilometre Koria-Ylilikkälä power line is currently in progress. The 110-kilovolt power line is being dismantled and replaced with a new 400-kilovolt line.

According to planning guidelines, wind and solar power plants must be kept away from transmission lines

Fingrid has received several inquiries about locating solar power plants in transmission line areas. However, it is not possible from the main grid’s perspective. Locating a wind power plant near a main grid transmission line is also problematic. Guidelines concerning wind and solar power plants are included in the updated planning guidelines meant for land-use planners from municipalities.
