The 1st of March was an important milestone in the European electricity market. On that day 20 years ago, continuous intraday trading between Finland and Sweden started with the ELBAS product. At the same time, Fingrid removed the cross-border transmission tariffs from its Nordic connections.
A renewed system to measure power quality and new travelling wave fault location will improve power quality monitoring and disturbance clearing in Fingrid’s main grid. The investments in new measurement equipment allow more effective anticipation, location and investigation of faults that pose a threat to the main grid. This will also enhance electrical safety in the main grid.
For the power system, summer doesn’t just mean warm and gentle breezes. We asked Operational Development Manager Jonne Jäppinen to tell us about the challenges that summer presents in terms of the electricity grid and electricity production.
Production and consumption in the power system must continuously be kept in balance. As renewable energy becomes more common, we also need new types of system balancers.
Fingrid and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) have begun preparations to connect Olkiluoto 3 to the main grid. The connection will require special arrangements because, once completed, Olkiluoto 3 will be considerably larger than earlier electricity production units.
More accurate device and load-specific consumption profiles and different types of open data will make it possible to optimise dimensioning of the existing energy system in the most economically feasible manner. The starting points for utilising open data in the energy market are very attractive, as nearly all customers have electricity meters that can be read in real time.
Fingrid’s general connection terms will be renewed this year. There is a need to update the current connection terms to respond to today’s requirements.
Our entire energy system is undergoing a fundamental change. Fingrid’s strategy recognises that this change is taking us toward clean energy technologies and a carbon-neutral society.
Early this year, Finland initiated discussion about the need to fix the electricity market, subsequently bringing about a broad-ranging exchange of ideas. The first concrete pilot project in the Nordic electricity exchange has also been launched.
