Fingrid is building a new substation in Inkeroinen on a plot of land rented from Stora Enso. Connection bays to serve four main grid customers will be constructed at the Tehtaanmäki substation: two for Stora Enso and the others for Kemijoki Oy and Kymenlaakson Sähköverkko Oy.
“Connecting four customer grids to a single substation is quite exceptional. This has been an interesting project,” says Project Manager Petri Hämäläinen from Fingrid.
Construction work is scheduled to begin in early 2019 and the last commissioning should be completed in late 2020.
The current main grid situation has a long history, based on the fact that Stora Enso owns devices that are part of the main grid but could no longer be renewed. According to the new Electricity Market Act, all parts of the main grid must be owned by Fingrid.
“The earlier topology didn’t meet modern requirements, and there was recently an operational disturbance as well. It could have been avoided if the connection had been up to date,” says Hämäläinen.
This project will significantly improve system security in the area.
