CEO, eSett
” We began planning the change well in advance. Our company began operating in 2017 and we have been forecasting the future from the very beginning. It’s important for the Nordic countries to develop the model together. The market benefits from having common operations and systems, and changes are made at the same time everywhere. We serve as a link between the Nordic countries, and we’re pleased that dialogue with all participants in the project has been open and proactive.”
Heikki Rantamäki
Business Director, Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö
”15-minute ISP will increase price fluctuations and highlight the importance of demand flexibility services. A 15-minute measurement period will mean changes in all spot-priced products. The shorter period will be a positive change if it is properly implemented.
For suppliers, monitoring the real-time balance and prices of balancing energy will be critical. Balancing one’s portfolio will be important in a financial sense, as incorrect forecasts could be expensive for electricity suppliers.”
Tero Karhumäki
Managing Director, Kuoreveden Sähkö
” The change will require a lot of different preparations, such as updating information systems and measurement devices. We can perform the majority of changes via remote updates. As a compact operator, we’ll be able to complete the necessary changes on schedule. It’s important for all industry players to interpret matters in the same way and take the same actions. Communication has to be extremely clear in this situation.”
Tommi Riski
Portfolio Manager, S-Voima
”For electricity users, the transition to 15 minutes will cause additional costs related to changes in systems and service agreements. New business opportunities will open for service providers. Once all market places have switched to 15 minute ISP, there will also be new possibilities for consumers.
In the future, demand flexibility will play a big role in stabilising the energy system. Electricity consumers must have the chance to participate in different marketplaces also during transfer time without significant investments. The grid operators are responsible for making efficient infrastructure available to electricity market parties. The changes in measurements to 15 minutes should not decrease competition in the electricity market.”
Teija Pelkonen
Balance responsible party, UPM
”The need for automation and digitalisation will increase. This will mean opportunities for those who have flexible production and consumption and the ability to optimise their activities. UPM is developing trading tools for the markets of the future, and we’ll also be offering our services to other industrial electricity users.
We have prepared for the transformation by analysing the impacts of Fingrid’s implementation plan as a producer and as a consumer, and by evaluating the updating needs related to meters and systems. Identifying change needs as early as possible will be a key factor in terms of success.”
Risto Lappi
Managing Director, Vantaa Energy Electricity Networks
”We have more than 120,000 accounting points, all of which will change to 15-minute measurement periods. The need for change has come very quickly. This means a lot of work and expenses, but the development need is understandable.
The transition phase will be challenging because we’ll have to simultaneously deal with 15-minute and one-hour information. The system must have a high level of reliability so that customers can be correctly invoiced. Suppliers of information systems and measurement devices will play a very important role in the change.”
